Con il termine mwcaproto-greco, o mwcqproto-ellenico, si intende la mwcgprotolingua progenitrice di tutte le mwcwlingue elleniche, da cui discesero il mwdamiceneo, il mwdqgreco antico, la mwdgkoinè, il mwdwgreco bizantino e il mweagreco moderno.

Le origini del proto-greco sono poco chiare, ma il parente più prossimo della lingua greca antica sembra essere la mwewlingua frigia, inoltre, alcune caratteristiche del greco, come esposto nella mwfateoria delle laringali, fanno pensare ad una radice comune con la mwfqlingua armena.cite-ref-1[1] La relativa vicinanza fra il greco e l'armeno sarebbe la dimostrazione della natura mwggparafiletica dell'mwgwisoglossa centum-satem. Queste tre lingue andrebbero a costituire la famiglia delle mwhalingue greco-armene, a sua volta inserita nella famiglia delle mwhqlingue proto-balcaniche.cite-ref-anthony81-2-0[2]cite-ref-3[3]

Pertanto, il protogreco sarebbe stato parlato nell'area balcanica attorno al III millennio a.C.cite-ref-drews-4-0[4]cite-ref-bryantpatton2005-5-0[5] e alcuni suoi elementi linguistici sembrano manifestare tracce di un mwlwsubstrato linguistico precedente.
